Retouching with Lightroom

People keep asking which software I’m using to edit my pictures. For about two and a half years I’ve been using Lightroom and most of the time only LR. I acknowledge that there are a lot of reasons to use Photoshop and from time to time I feel that I’m reaching the limits of LR especially when it comes to selective editing. But nevertheless it’s a lot of money.

While I concentrated on an overall editing workflow and colours in my past tutorials, I want to focus on only one aspect today: retouching. Just one thing to remember: For me, retouching usually is the last step because only with contrast, colours etc. fixed I know the exact amount of retouch needed for a specific look. I know whether I want a rather smooth impression (so I would be more careful) or whether a quick retouch is enough to keep a rough look. (more…)

Here it is – a new tutorial. I asked you for special wishes here and there. I got very different answers and only one person had a concrete picture in mind. Other wishes were how I work with (available) light, colour edit in general, how to retouch and finally how I guide my models. I could write forever about all those questions but I’d like to concentrate on one issue since it has been asked for several times: colours. I’ve been using Adobe Lightroom, version 3.2 (for all my pictures for about two years).

Hello everybody, welcome to another tutorial on Lightroom. I actually did this in LR2.7 but now I’m using LR3. So don’t wonder why I’m not using any of the nice new features. You can click on any image to enlarge.

Kim retouch 1 This is the original image. It was shot with a Canon 40D with a Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 attached @ ISO 100, f/2.0, 1/400 sec. It was a quite cloudy late afternoon. We had a reflector lying at our feet (as you can see from the highlights in her eyes).
